Cubs are too bad a team. Real baseball fans in Chicago cheer for the Sox. Cubs games are just a party. St. Louis fans make that a rivalry out of hatred for Chicago anything!

Your loyalties lie with the Red Sox, thus, the Yankees vs. Red Sox is very personal for you. A Cards or Cubs fan may say their rivalry is the best because it is personal for them. To me, both are intense rivalries but I have no personal stake in either. ESPN simply overhypes the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry playing to the loyalties of their respected fans by giving it the utmost attention on daily basis. Which makes it seem larger than it may be.

AHAAHA! I bated you into my point exactly...RED SOX YANKEES IIISSSS PERSONAL!!! It matters...In case you did not know this, I AM A DIE HARD RED SOX FAN FIRST AND FOREMOST and I run this blog. Much like everything I do, it is indeed a sham! But to answer your question:

I have been to countless Flyers Pens games and a Redskins Cowboys game...they don't come close. The only thing that did was Duke vs. UNC. I can only speculate about Rangers vs Islanders but it is America's fifth most important sport (behind golf).

Here is why it is the best:

1) number one spectator and and participant sport in America
2) two best teams
3) unbelievable and undeniable history linking the two teams together
4) rival cities, not just teams
5) very personal on all levels-players and fans
6) Its the Red Sox fricking Yankees man

I ask you this in rebuttal, have you been to a Redskin/Cowboy game? Perhaps a Flyers/Pens game? Rangers/Islanders? If not, I am not sure you can say the rivalry isn't close. While I don't discount the intensity of the Yankees Red Sox, my mere question was, does ESPN shoving it down our throats everyday make it overhyped. Not only do the majority of both teams don't like each other the true fans-who really make rivalries what they are- of both teams hate each other more than any rivalry in any American sport. (i have been in two altercations my self). Ask V-tek, pedroia, youk, ellsbury, lowell, beckett, etc what they think of the Yanks! Plaxico through a PERSONAL PARTY FOR OPPOSING TEAMS PLAYERS. Only true rivalry in PRO sports. Pro football players are notorious for fraternizing with each other. Even our beloved Steelers (remember plax?). By the way ESPN also showed Pirates preseason games. College sports is by far better as far as rivalries go.

Overhyped no doubt seeing how ESPN now airs Red Sox/Yankee preseason games. As for the only true rivalry, because they hate each other, I disagree, plenty of rivalries out there like that. Cowboys/Redskins, Steelers/Ravens, UNC/Duke, Florida/Florida State..etc.
